A Fly’s Chance

If a spider cracked a snail’s shell,

in an attempt to vanquish his 

protected neighbor, with a rock,

would you feel sad?
The world struggles and consumes, like

you twist and turn under the weight

The bills, the outflow,

the boredom with it all,

It seems like an insult to know so much, only to 

waste it all on some dull idea of breathing.
And you won’t get far, because knowing what you know,

there is nowhere to go. The world is a cosmic 


try to go all the way to the end of the planet

as far as legs can,

and you end up where you started.
And this is the life that starts over everyday. Some beg for it,

some let it pass by,

some beg for it, feeling it leave them like a lover that’s changed their mind.

It’s all the same song,




It’s a death chant for a rebirth,

the pipe organ bellowing for the dead while a choir of youth

fills the air with voice.

Planet exception on a peninsula (three-sided)

For some time now, San Francisco has seen private shuttles criss-cross their streets during rush hour. We have Bauer busses that ferry the tech elite to their fancy offices on the peninsula, and we have a slew of small companies, all vying to be the third party that the massive tech giants pick once Bauer unionizes proper. This human traffic is not new to people in the City; hop-on hop-off tourist buses have been annoying all in sight for what seems like a millennia. They chug up the steepest of hills, flash photography popping out the windows, running over old people. That has been steady ever since travelers woke up to San Francisco’s beauty. What is loathsome is the separation that happens when the people on the street stare into the bus and see people nothing like themselves…and vice versa.

Why should people hate the shuttles? They take hundreds of cars off the streets every day, cutting down on harmful gases that would be pumped into the atmosphere if those people were forced into their cars. And they also free up valuable space on the public version of the shuttles, MUNI. If the people that rode in the shuttle crammed onto MUNI, there would be even less room. San Franciscans should thank the shuttle program solely due to that.

The reason it is not is its own fault. What the shuttle represents has little to do with its riders. It’s a spit in the face to all the people that get up early and stomp out their door, rushing to get to a job that doesn’t appreciate them enough to buy them free lunch, create a designer workspace in which to harmoniously create the new world of business. Worst of all, the job doesn’t provide them with a school bus to get to school everyday. The shuttle has nothing to do with treating some people better than others, and its up to the the tech workers to feel more important than other people on their own accord. We all know how that goes.

But really, the people on the shuttles should feel a little bad. The average salary for a software engineer in San Francisco is $106,000 a year. I don’t know if that includes benefits or anything else, and that is astounding. Considering the average age of the people that do the coding, I would say that they don’t need a school bus to get them to school everyday. On the other end of the spectrum, we have the median income in the City, which is $84,000 a year. This includes all the regular business people, city managers, doctors, lawyers, baristas, bike messengers, etc. Remove the professionals, and the average wage undoubtedly goes lower. The median income in the Tenderloin (close to Twitter, the NEMA complex, etc,) is a paltry 28,000 a year…. and nsot one single group gets a school bus like the tech workers.

This tells us something very clear; we need to shift the people on the bus. We need to shift the groups so that the poor people get to ride the shuttles, and the tech workers get to ride public transit. This has two distinct benefits, each spanning humanistic and social ranges. First, with the poor getting a perk (maybe for the first time in their lives), they may see their spirits rise. Being depressed emotionally is generally agreed to be a horrible place, and no person should have to deal with that, especially if other people can compensate for it without trouble. Having someone care about them enough to pick them up from where they are at, and drive them to their place of employment would brighten their day. Productivity would rise, bringing positive rewards the the businesses that employed them.

The tech workers, well, they should take the bus. The public bus. The rewards are almost too many to write down. Ego would have to be checked. Having to squash your body into a stranger without knowing the least bit about them can be anxiety provoking, but knowing that the other person probably graduated from a good college might take some of the load off. It’s a great way to learn to deal with personal issues. And you just couldn’t talk about it without lowering yourself to the experience of it all. No one boasts about being lowered a peg or two.

Learning to be humble is invaluable in life, but so is the saving of money. MUNI is cheap compared to buying a car and paying for gas. Even electric cars can set you back. Most electric cars are in the $25,000 range or far above. A monthly MUNI pass is only $77 a month, $924 a year. Far less expensive than a Tesla. This leaves the eco-friendly tech worker more money to stuff into a 401K. See how this works out well for them?

With happier poor people and humbler rich kids, the City is a better place in general. Moving the tech workers off the shuttles and replacing them with the poor just makes so much sense. The shuttle would have to be re-routed to some more industrial or blighted areas, but no matter. They are all contract and beholden to no one. And even better, with the focus on alternative modes of transport, the traffic burden on the City loses its rush hour grasp. With the free time, the rest of the City dwellers could lead more productive lives.

We should all learn to be alternative with the way we think and act, especially in San Francisco. Thinking different with what we are known for.

Human Shields

One can’t help think that this housing problem in San Francisco is simply a changing of the guard, the movement of one group of people to another place, like muscling in on the Ohlone (this happened). This is clearly illustrated in the current state of affairs with wealthy, young workers flaunting their capability to pay astronomical rent when outbidding others on the opportunity to make other people rich. Renting does not benefit you, no matter what you think. You will never have a right to the property you pay for.

So maybe this is just the more capable forcing out the less capable. In a recent article by Joe Fitzgerald Rodriguez, San Francisco natives lamented about their changing home, albeit with far less vitriol than the Mission housing activists. They say it’s because of the new techies, but I see it as a simple imbalance of groups that have always existed here in San Francisco.

And we used to have balance. The city has always had neighborhoods for different types of people. We have the Marina for the yuppies (young, urban professionals = y. u. p. = yuppie), the Mission for the scumbags/weirdos/artists, the Bayview for the thugs, the western neighborhoods for people that had kids and dropped out. It was all here. There was plenty of space for everyone, and unspoken borders kept you where you should be.

There are too many yuppies here in the city. And I have to characterize a yuppie as someone who is very young and therefore very naive about life. When I moved to the city for Los Angeles, I was in my very early 20’s and ignorant. After mistakes, I have now learned a few things about life. Yuppies, with there extremely high paying jobs, don’t really know what to do with their money. If there is a young person that makes a lot of money and say, invests is properly or saves it, then they automatically count themselves out of this categorization. If there have a lot of money and spend it on expensive clothing or ridiculous parties or worse, well, they should count themselves defined.

Yuppies are just dense. I am not saying that they are horrible people. They don’t kill people in the streets (most of the time) or engage in antisocial behavior (most of the time). They are mainly hardwired to self serve, to only think and care about the person in the mirror. Again, not horrible, but not exactly edifying to society. Patrick Bateman taught us that a hyper keen perspective on the pointless details of life were more important than acting civilized, and if these yuppies picture themselves woven into the thin blanket that the City has spread over it, there is little in the way of a moral block that will stop them.

And the reason this is so horrible is the effect housing in the city. The large number of yuppies is driving the economy. Rent skyrockets when you have too many people that are willing to pay astronomical prices just to live without understanding what they get. Most people would scoff at a one bedroom in an old wood framed house for $2500 a month..but not yuppies. They just pay. I marvel at what is happening downtown. I lived in the Tenderloin for eight years and can say that it is a shithole. It was an affordable shithole, but it is still a shithole. And when I hear that people pay over $2000 for a crappy studio while their rent controlled neighbor smokes crack and talks to themselves all night to the tune of $600 a month, I just can’t believe it. By the way, I still walk the old land from time to time, and it is still a filthy shithole.

The stupidity problem is something that will never be solved. Every major era in history has had to deal with this issue. It’s a byproduct of youth. Young people have the power to stand up to any regime, invent amazing things, change the world, but that is only some of them. The rest are emotionally unstable and only capable of following others over a cliff. The stupidity problem here in San Francisco, however, is one that I cannot dodge, hence these words.

Can I have your number?

Scores of eyes, trawling slowly

For a catch, intent clear as a child’s wailing.

There is no point in making a case, it’s built in the chest, it roars for hours a day.

It does, however, take a saint to ouch it to the back of the line with stealing and murder, a worthy position for it. 

Taking time for it chips away at the day, and comfort is often mistaken for the apex movement. 

Yet humans rely on it, and not the body, but the mind.

Crossing Over

5 minutes late was a far away plague,

Like the Black Death,

The freedom of never worrying of losing it all was like albatross wings.

But the transition to a realm of strict rules, a grasp of interest, a contract of forever.

Animals push and pull, but their mouths contain a bit with reigns reaching into the abyss above, slaves to the day.

As I spend my sweat to wriggle free, the question of choice is present.

Why? This was a choice. 

Their eyes are dead because their souls fetched a discount price. 

Masses Transit

When I was young, I used to take the bus to school with my brothers and sister. We did it by ourselves, and we were clearly young. We got to school everyday by ourselves, and our parents didn’t have to bother with it. It taught self reliance.

It also taught us tolerance, well, taught me tolerance at least. There is something good about the bus. It’s a Petri dish of people, form all kinds of places, all with the same goal: go somewhere. There are all kinds of places people go and for various reasons, but they go. And that is the important part of the whole thing. The other important part is they are all doing it together. And people are people, so they do it in their own way, which can be difficult to other people.

This brings up another important part: learning to deal with other people. This is very different that being shuttled around by someone, mentally and physically sealed off from the rest of the world. Externally, it thickens a shell that might bring you closer to people and make you more human (for what that is worth these days) and internally removes you from that island you might be on, lost in your own goals and desires, no matter how removed they are from reality. Being on the bus snaps you back to ‘here’ by way of dealing with other people.

Say you need to sit, but there are no seats. If you are not pregnant or visibly old, then you have no more a right to a seat that anyone else. What is on the inside shouldn’t matter, and really doesn’t. That island contains nothing that would give you the right. Learning this is fundamental to understanding humanity, and without it, people become a social disease, only taking from those that can’t afford to give.

And riding private shuttles is a way of growing that disease. This growing phenomenon is the same as being shuttled around by parents, with the same mental and physical barriers. It teaches people nothing, only that they somehow have earned the right to be different, when there is nothing really different about the water or skin or chemicals that make up our physical bodies. The quality of our souls, if you believe in that, is the difference, and that can only be increased by learning to connect with other souls. Hopefully this is done in close proximity, and not through glass and metal.

POHH Pahhhhhhh, POHH Pahhhhhhh

The Empire Strikes Back is a horribly dark movie. There is no build to heroic resolution, just calamity after calamity, ending with Han Solo being frozen and taken way, Luke learning the truth about his family and then getting his hand chopped off. Quite horrible. It seems that this day was bad for the technology sector in San Francisco in the same way it was for the Rebel Alliance. Just like the evil Empire striking back, it seems the City has disrupted back.

The SFMTA has just enacted a law restricting travel on Market street between 8th and 3rd Street. No turns will be allowed onto Market Street, greatly reducing the number of vehicles in the busy Financial District of downtown. This will make it safer for everyone. Commercial vehicles will still be allowed on the street, as will taxis.

Here is where the disruption comes in; rideshare companies will not be allowed to make money using city resources. A lot of tech ‘disruption’ revolves around a few smart people identifying a legal loophole, and exploiting it (rideshares). Rideshare companies do not make their drivers pay commercial taxes or fees, but still use the road to make money. Those fees go to pay for things like infrastructure improvements, road work, police, etc. Taxis pay for their ‘office,’ but rideshare companies don’t.

The City just disrupted them. Listening to them complain about not being able to break the law while putting hundreds of cars on the street and pollution in the air without paying for the services to manage the damage they do is laughable. I hope that the City continues to rein in the baloney.
